Most likely your mothers maiden name, is from the Abercrombies of Fife, the Crombie Sept of Clan Gordon or any other clan, is to do with a particular family of Crombie (an individual family) unless you can clearly trace your family tree/roots to that particular Crombie family, then most likely your mothers family line comes from the Abercrombies of Fife.

Another note: Also, it's not unusal to find septs of families bearing the same name as that of clans, and in this case Abercrombie, and aber means 'mouth of a river' and in this case referring to the mouth of the 'River Forth' (Firth of Forth) Abercrombie = Rivermouthcrombie, so it would make sense to drop the aber from Crombie as the family moved from place to place.
