I think that well cut trews(as opposed to trousers) are very elegant. The problem is, and this is the problem that the OP was going to face, is that the English when seeing tartan trews(they don't know the difference between them and trousers either) think you are a clown of some sort, or, you are about to have a game of golf , or both! To be fair, they do not see tartan trews with appropriate jacket often, or even, ever.

Have you tried ebay?
I just got a Harris Tweed Jacket for $50.
I would think you could get both jackets with that budget.
(and maybe sell you too large ones to pay for them)

If you could find an example of each I'd appreciate it. I think I know what one looks like compared to the other but I'm not 100%.

Ok. I'm back. Trews= High waist, no side seam, no pockets. Trousers= waist, possible belt and pockets. Sound about right?

Miltary Trews = high back (usually referred to as a fishtail back) and high wasted, usually worn with braces, no side seam, may have side slash pockets

Civilian Trews = same as above but without fishtail back, still high waisted

Trousers = just like a regular pair of suit trousers

Thanks for all your help. It was my wife who originally mentioned trousers but anywhere I would want to look smart, I would wear my kilt and she now agrees. She chose the bottle green hose and I also have a pair of navy blue.

That looks sharp to me!

Have you tried this jacket/waistcoat combo with pants? The body is close to the same length as the arms, which is rather au courant.
