Jacket to wear with kilt or tr@users
I am going to buy a new jacket to wear mostly with my kilt but there may be the odd occasion where I would be expected to wear trousers/pants/strides such as an English wedding/funeral in Englandshire. Because I have had to lose weight due to my age, high blood pressure etc. etc. none of my existing suits/jackets fit me. I am retired on a budget so can only afford 1 good jacket and expect to pay around £200 to £300. I like Argyll jackets so would one of those look ok with trousers?

Personally I think any jacket connected to the Kilt i.e. the Argyll would be so wrong why not go for Trews with a Black Argyll + black tie for funerals and coloured tie for everything else

The quick and honest answer is:- No. There is no kilt cut jacket that really goes with trousers. UNLESS you go down the well cut tartan trews route, but then you are, perhaps, hitting the budget pretty hard.--------and then, you are hitting the "South of the border problem" where trews are probably even less well understood than kilts.

Thanks all and I agree and I don't like trews. Maybe best if I just hire a suit should the need arrise. Thanks again. I will get a black argyll as I think they are the most versatile for use just with the kilt.

Here's a recent photo of the Drum Major competitors at Shotts showing Argyll jackets worn both with kilt and tartan trousers.

It's long been done in the Army, the wearing of kilt-cut jackets with trousers (tartan trousers however).

"The South of the border problem"
I think that well cut trews(as opposed to trousers) are very elegant. The problem is, and this is the problem that the OP was going to face, is that the English when seeing tartan trews(they don't know the difference between them and trousers either) think you are a clown of some sort, or, you are about to have a game of golf , or both! To be fair, they do not see tartan trews with appropriate jacket often, or even, ever.

I have a dark grey charcoal jacket( staghorn buttons) whicI find appropriate for every occasion except "black tie". IMHO black argyll with silver buttons can look out of place on more dressed down, less formal occasions. Others WILL disagree...

Have you tried ebay?
I just got a Harris Tweed Jacket for $50.
I would think you could get both jackets with that budget.
(and maybe sell you too large ones to pay for them)

I am with you almost 100%, the only exception being, formal day attire(morning dress equivalent) where the black silver buttoned barathea(NOT tweed)argyll is appropriate. Where you might want to take a slightly less high profile at a wedding as a less than "premier guest", try swapping your silver buttons, on the barathea argyll, with plain black ones.
