I think wearing another clan's tartan is acceptable, especially if you don't have a tartan of your own. However, the Caledonia tartan is very similar to the red MacPherson, is widely available, and is pretty much the universal tartan, yet is not nearly as common (from what I've seen) as certain other universal and fashion tartans. If you like both equally, I'd go with the Caledonia.
