Interested in Harley Davidson in wool?

While watching the San Francisco Giants game Friday evening I searched the Ferret for tartans containing orange and black. It is common in North America for folks to dress casually on Fridays and this often includes sports teams’ colors or jerseys. So I thought, why not a kilt in team colors.

As it turns out one of the best looking black/orange tartans is Harley Davidson Corporate, the legendary motorcycle company. The STA description said the tartan had been woven by Fraser and Kirkbright. I contacted them and they said the tartan is restricted but for a 30 yard (double width) order they would request permission to weave it. This is not a guarantee permission would be granted just that they are willing to ask. So are there enough SF Giant fans or Hog enthusiasts out there to warrant taking the next step in this potential project. This is not a commitment to order just a general measure of enthusiasm and interest.

How much Harley Davidson are you interested in?

I don't know if it's possible but you might be able to get a H-D kilt from Burnett's and Struth (http://www.burnetts-struth.com/). I've seen the tartan there (I believe they were the ones who designed it) but I've not seen it offered as a kilt. It may be worth an email to ask.

    Just a thought.

Looks quite nice in your pic... followed the link and they have it made up as a kilt... sett is very small... doesnt look as good...

Having heard some of the stories about how harley protects its licensing rights, i have to wonder how much they would be charging to let you use it...

Thanks for the lead. I will check with B&S.

For a special order it is not uncommon to adjust a set to a kilt makers specifications based on the intended use.

That is certainly a potential obstacle. I expected the project could be challenging which is why I wanted to see if there was any interest before I spent a lot of time on it.

    Thanks for the input!

Because this is a Corporate and restricted tartan, this may not be so. Harley Davidson will be final arbiter.

It looks like it is a moot point. After some more thought it seems a better idea to do a personal design and have it woven in PV. Better material for beer and mustard stains. It was a bit of a lark anyway but I'll keep the idea on the back burner.

The high school in a nearby town uses those colors. Now if I could convince the band instructor to put the marching band in kilts...
The grass is greener on the other side of the fence...and it's usually greenest right above the septic tank.

I Ride and would be interested in 6 yds (single width) if you get it to work out.

I've called the local Harley shop and they have no idea what I'm talking about when I asked about the Harley tartan. ("Turban? No, we don't have a turban." "No, I said 'tartan'." "What's a tartan?")

Then I called Burnett's and Struth. They have and/or will make for you a kilt in the Harley tartan. Give them a call and ask for Brandon,
1-877-828-3232 or go to the web site www.burnetts-struth.com. Alternatively, they may sell you a length of material, if you like. I've never asked.

If you're anywhere near Vegas, I was told that they are going to the Highland Games there mid-April (http://www.burnetts-struth.com/news/...and-Games.html) and, because there are a lot of bikers at the games, they will have Harley kilts with them. If you're going, have fun. I wish I was able to join you. http://www.lasvegascelticsociety.org/games.html

The offical Harley tartan is restricted and as noted you can only get it with 30 yards. There is however a tartan we like to call the Biker's tartan which has black and orange and white in it. Very nice looking tartan that Harley Davidson fans would be sure to love. We will have a hybrid in it at Las Vegas games and offer it in casual and 8 yard kilts as well. Available in a variety of weights. Contact us for more info.

We did not design the tartan though. Let me know if you want me to post a picture.
