I think wearing another clan's tartan is acceptable, especially if you don't have a tartan of your own. However, the Caledonia tartan is very similar to the red MacPherson, is widely available, and is pretty much the universal tartan, yet is not nearly as common (from what I've seen) as certain other universal and fashion tartans. If you like both equally, I'd go with the Caledonia.

but I have been told I can't legally or moraly wear a clan tartan
I had a good giggle at that line. As to asking permissions for wearing tartans? You can if you want to, but unless the tartan has been copyrighted or severely restricted (Balmoral) you don't need to do so.

Can you imagine if every piper or every dancer had to get permission to wear a tartan that they weren't 'legally or morally' entitled to? Well, lets just say that piping or dancing would either not be done or done wearing no tartan at all.

The people who tell you that you can never wear another clan are stating their opinion as fact. Propriety would call for you to specifically wear your clan if you were in a clan environment or specifically wanted to call attention to your family connection. In non-clan settings you can wear whatever you like as long as it is with respect. It is also a good idea to at least know the basics about the tartan, like it's name. God bless in the search for a kiltin' good time!
