I think that well cut trews(as opposed to trousers) are very elegant. The problem is, and this is the problem that the OP was going to face, is that the English when seeing tartan trews(they don't know the difference between them and trousers either) think you are a clown of some sort, or, you are about to have a game of golf , or both! To be fair, they do not see tartan trews with appropriate jacket often, or even, ever.
If you could find an example of each I'd appreciate it. I think I know what one looks like compared to the other but I'm not 100%.
