OK, We all pretty much recognize that these "Lairds of Lochaber" type things are all in fun, and anyone who thinks they are getting more than a cheesy document (suitible for framing) out of it are "misguided" to say the least.
I have to wonder, of the misguided souls that do show up somewhere they've never been looking to exploit their "rights", what do they think they're going to get anyway? Free drinks? People tipping their hats?
I doubt people who actually are heriditary Lairds or whatever don't get that!
If I ever get over to England I'll have visit Cheshire (my family was quite the noise over there in the 12th century) and see if I'm owed some back taxes!

I don't think there is anything wrong with the "square-foot" thing as long as one treats it for what it is and NOT pretend they are something they are not.
Steve may well have the right attitude towards the "Laird of Lochaber" and indeed, it was thoughtful of his good lady to think of him and his connection to Scotland.
However, for the retailers of these scams it bags them £1.2 million per acre, and it is big buisiness. Apart from the 'titles' they say it bestows upon you, you dont even own the 1 sq. ft. Plot. and give you a worthless deed that isnt even worth the paper it is written on.
To own land 'by contract' in Scotland both parties have to sign the missive, the land can not be registered in Land Registry of Scotland as it is deemed to small. So, the peddlers of this scam are the legal landowners as it is their name on the title deed registered with The Land Registry of Scotland and can sell the whole lot as and when they wish, leaving their 'Lairds & Lords high and dry.
Personally, I feel, it degrades Scottish culture & heritage and makes Scotland look like some sort of 3rd world African scamming Country.
