So now I am left wondering ...
How clannish are the modern day families in the rural Ozarks?
How clannish were the Ulster-Scots?

Yes. ![Cool](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif)
It really depends on where you go, but I know NPS Rangers who work at Ozark National Scenic Riverways who can tell you a few stories...

As far as the Ulster Scots go, probably the best, and certainly the most entertaining, modern work on the subject is the book Born Fighting, by Senator (D) James Webb.
Modern, Todd, I said modern.

Of course, Webb's POV is an Appalachian one; while the roots of Ozarks culture are Appalachian, there are some major differences in the two. The Ozarks is not Appalachia West. ![Wink](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)
For an Ozarks perspective, I would highly recommend Brooks Blevins' Hillfolks: a history of Arkansas Ozarkers & their image from the University of North Carolina Press:
http://www.amazon.com/Hill-Folks-His.../dp/0807853429
It does focus more on Arkansas than Missouri, but it will give a good overview of the Ozark cultural region.

I truly appreciate the recommendations for reading material. I plan to put my local library to work.

I have to thank the OP, Shuteye, for bringing this movie, which finally came out on DVD here in the frozen north, to my attention. I thought things had really changed when the hill folk switched from 'shine and started growing pot- glad I'm missing out on the latest developments as shown in this film. Four stars for a compelling motion picture.
It should be stressed that this is about an extended rural clan with a criminal tradition, whereas a far greater number of hill folk right up through Canada are rather boringly devout Christians who won't even attend a dance.
