an coigreach albannach here lads. can't help agreeing with those that suggest a wee visit to the doctors may be in order. whilst i'm here i'd like to ask nighthawk if he could expand on where he got his ideas from as to thinking that going regimental is a myth based on misunderstanding? i know i myself have read old accounts from eyewitnesses who actually saw that highlanders wore no under garments beneath what were then their belted plaids. i have not only walked many a mile in the kilt i own but have also ran in it through very rough terrain and slept in it in a camping out situation.as for sweat i've competed in highland games on hot days and once competed in a kilted race.sweaty and smelly, yes but nothing a good airing out couldn't fix or if really bad there's always the dry cleaners.which is nothing to what those men who fought in situations like the trenches of ww1 experienced. to the couple of ladies looking in on this thread the following may amuse you; i must say the feeling of doing all this and more wearing nothing under the kilt really gives you a feeling of freedom that you do miss once back into the breeks.the old highlanders so hated the law brought in after the 45 that banned wearing belted plaids or kilts that a highland dance came into being that has in it's steps an action symbolizing the kicking off and discarding of pants which they concidered unmanly.it's still danced today though fewer now know its meaning sadly, called the sean truis. as i've said before it's a free choice to wear whatever you like but if you are interested in wearing the kilt as a way to hold onto scottish heritage then to do so fully traditionaly, that is with no underwear, is to experience it as the old highlanders would have worn it.and there are many history books that state this as fact.if this were not fact why would the old highland regiments have made a point of it? those who 'flash' people when sitting or kneeling to take photo's etc do so because they either don't know how to or carelessly choose not to do so properly. i feel lucky because the kilt i own is an ex army blanket weave 18 ounce black watch.i've never worn any thing else in 25 years and that includes cold rainy blustery days and hot sweaty days both in australia and in scotland.so what i'm about to suggest is theory only as i can't talk from experience;but could you lads that are buying these light weight jobs be making it harder for yourselves comfort wise? being not as smooth as the blanket weave would that tend to give the chafe problems?or do they become smoother with wear?the shirt the old highlanders wore was long enough to reach at least mid thigh so maybe wearing something similar length in a smooth comfortable material could help. at the end of the day each one must choose what he is comfortable in but i will always believe that those who wear the kilt in its fully traditional manner,with an understanding and a respect for its history, are wearing it in its purest form.
