However, each to their own.

I'm not a fan, I think they look sloppy most of the time.
But to each his own. Like the aformentioned gillie brouges and white hose, I don't get personally 'offended' if I see one, they are just not for me.

OK, since you asked...To me, the scrunched up, wrinkled appearance looks sloppy. I feel the same way about cravats and ascots too. I just prefer the neat, tidy look that a bow tie for formal, or a four-in-hand (long tie) for less formal gives, and in either case, I tie my own.

Or a silk version of a bandana tied around a cowboys neck.

I can't imagine the ruche tie offending anyone on the planet, but it may indeed not be to some folks' taste. I notice on this site a lot of major friction between those who insist on their personal right to do what they want, and those who place a premium on getting along with others without upset. I deeply respect those rights of the individual, but I place a slightly higher premium on respect for others.
While it may not be to taste for others, in the case of the tie it is highly unlikely to actually truly offend, so if you like it, go for it!
Agreed, and very well put Father.
When I think back to some of the super wide, wild ties I wore back in the late 60's, early 70's,.... such as the one shaped and printed exactly like a fish, or the one that had so much bright orange in the design that it would have recieved Coast Guard safety approval for long distance visability at sea...... Well, after picking out and wearing ties like that (and sober I might add), I will never feel qualified to pass judgement on anyone else's choice of a tie.

I love them and when I'm stepping out in a formal setting, I think they work fantastically. Not for everyone though, but I love them!

I neither like nor dislike the this tie. As a fashion statement it is like every fashion trend that has preceded it. Some will like it others will not.

It's really not as difficult as rocket science:-
Casual - No tie
Business/Smart - Plain WOOL Tie
Funerals - Black wool tie
Wedding - Sliver-grey SILK tie
"BlackTie" - Black bow tie!!!
"White Tie" - White bow tie or jabot
I defend your right to dress differently, BUT...

The ruche tie has to be one of the sloppiest-looking things I have seen in men's wear (and having worked in men's wear in my college days in the 80's, that says a lot). It just doesn't look like a proper tie to my eyes. It looks like someone took a worn-out scarf and tied it with a four-in-hand knot.
