Looking for a new Dress Sporran, Any recommendations?

    Hi all,

I am extremely new to the forum , only a few hours old in fact but i have a very relevant question for everyone!

I am looking for a new Dress sporran, i already have a plain black seal skin one with a celtic knot cantle but i want something that will A. Be able to go abroad and B. is a bit different in terms of cantle and skin.

Any suggestions of companies who are good with sporrans or have good deals?

    Thanks!!!

    Peter.

My first choice is Ferguson Britt sporrans

Second is L&M sporrans. They always do nice sporrans.

    Hi Peter,

Like most things in life, we usually don't settle on the first thing that we come to - cars, girlfriends, hairstyles. My advice therefore is to get a relatively cheap dress sporran and then decide what it is that you require. Is it all about the bling, or will you need lots of cargo space, or somewhere in the middle?

I would recommend Heritage of Scotland as a retailer. This is their eBay site.

It will give you a starting point to work from. In fairness, I have to say that there has been some controversy here about them. But also in fairness, I have been a customer of theirs many times and have always had value for money.

    Regards

    Chas

I really like silver fox fur sporrans. I've seen several Scottish-made ones with nice pewter cantles that are lovely, and stand out from the ordinary.

Yes the Britt Ferguson sporrans are amazing. The ones with fur could be worn with day or evening dress.

Or you could get an antique sporran that's quite different from anything made nowadays. That's what I did.

Dress or Dressy? You need a full mask muskrat sporran.

If you want an actual "dress" sporran, something that is appropriate for wear with formal Highland attire (black kilt jacket, black waistcoat, white shirt, black bow tie) then I'd suggest a sealskin sporran with either a silver, or sliver plated cantle; avoid chrome (way too shiny). Probably your single best option is a traditional full-face muskrat sporran; unlike other sporrans this one is appropriate for any level of dress (casual, dressy, formal day wear or formal evening wear). It is, quite simply, the sporran equivalent of the black dress Argyle jacket.

Whatever you choose, avoid buying an over-sized sporran. In the final analysis they end up looking showy, rather than elegant (which is the purpose of formal attire-- looking elegant). And in reality, how much "junk" do you need to take to a formal event? Not nearly as much as you'd think.

Just to be clear, the full mask muskrat (or musquash as it seems to be called these days) does not have a cantle, hence its utility as both and and evening wear sporran. Once you add a bright and shiny cantle, a sporran becomes pretty much an evening only accessory.
