I waited to post in this thread, and I waited some more. My fiance really REALLy likes the look of me in a kilt with a non traditional hat, and I was watching to see what y'all had to say without me muddying the waters.

I think what we are seeing is if the kilt is being worn as a "bottom" just like surfer shorts or pressed wool slacks or blue jeans, it can sometimes work with a non-trad hat.

My current rule of thumb hinges on kilt hose. If I am going to wear kilt hose with the kilt I _might_ get away with a non-trad hat, but it takes some effort, as demonstrated by the wizard.

With socks other than kilt hose (and typically lace up boots of some kind) wearing a non-trad hat with the kilt can look OK to, though it isn't a traditional look at all.

The other time I waited was to get a pic of my own to contribute after the wizard's challenge.

Bugbear: It does look a lot like a weathered Lamont, but you can see some differences. In any case it is a good-looking tartan and blends well in that desert environment.

A giant sombrero? I live in New Mexico. You just gave me an idea. Adios amigo! :-)
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

According to figheadair, that sett is a "Smiths' Campbell of Argyll."

He later said those colors would have not been historically used to make that tartan.
I think it's just kind of based on the Lamont tartan, but is not really a Lamont.

Good luck with the giant sombrero. Just remember, it should shade the whole village.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

AKScott: Yes, it does seem that some folks are decoupling the kilt from other Scottish attire (except perhaps in more formal Scottish events) and experimenting with a variety of looks.

The only thing incongruous to me about your attire in the picture is the kilt and T-shirt along with several inches of snow! Brrrr. :-)

I wear and olive green crusher with my kilts on occasion, as well as a black Kufi.

    I had to dig back to my early days of kiltwearing, but here's a picture;

The Lodge at Winter Park, 10,700 feet elevation.

I actually bought that hat on the trip. I took a sock hat, but felt I needed something that would keep my gourd warm and the sun off too.

Zardoz: Cool photo. Did you ride a lift up? I'll bet you were the only one on the mountain in a kilt. The hat looks great and I love that big tang-buckled belt. Do you know where I can get one?

It looks COLD. I notice your snow bunny had her hands in her warmer. My favorite ski area is Mary Jane - right next door.

Yes, we rode the lift up, and I was the only kilted guy there, that day at least, folks at the lodge said they had a scotch tasting with a lot of kilts a few weeks before.
And yes, we rode the lift up, we heard people going the other way say "Hey, that guy was in a kilt" a couple of times as they passed!
It was around 27 degrees (F) but the sun was really bright and warm, I shed my big coat shortly after we got there.
The big belt is from Buzz Kidder.
