Jacket to wear with kilt or tr@users

My rather impecunious, but still grandly dressed friend seems to find the most amazing suits and tweeds at Sue Ryder. Perhaps you should check them out when next in town.

While down in Edinburgh Tuesday and Wednesday I ended up buying one of these jackets in denim blue tweed. (looks nothing like actual denim)

with matching waistcoat.

100% pure new wool Jacket with imitation staghorn buttons.

£99 for jacket and £50 for waistcoat.

I think that well cut trews(as opposed to trousers) are very elegant. The problem is, and this is the problem that the OP was going to face, is that the English when seeing tartan trews(they don't know the difference between them and trousers either) think you are a clown of some sort, or, you are about to have a game of golf , or both! To be fair, they do not see tartan trews with appropriate jacket often, or even, ever.

If you could find an example of each I'd appreciate it. I think I know what one looks like compared to the other but I'm not 100%.

If you go to the Highland Clans merchant site (just google it) click on tab for highlamd wear you will see Trews, click on that and you will see 3 styles and an explanation

Ok. I'm back. Trews= High waist, no side seam, no pockets. Trousers= waist, possible belt and pockets. Sound about right?

Miltary Trews = high back (usually referred to as a fishtail back) and high wasted, usually worn with braces, no side seam, may have side slash pockets

Civilian Trews = same as above but without fishtail back, still high waisted

Trousers = just like a regular pair of suit trousers

Thanks for all your help. It was my wife who originally mentioned trousers but anywhere I would want to look smart, I would wear my kilt and she now agrees. She chose the bottle green hose and I also have a pair of navy blue.

That looks sharp to me!

Have you tried this jacket/waistcoat combo with pants? The body is close to the same length as the arms, which is rather au courant.

That's a very dashing outfit. And with the savings, you can still purchase a nice sport coat if you like.

Not a fan of the Argyle even with a kilt, let alone trousers or trews. However if budget and versatility are a big part of the equation, either go with a currently-fashionably short saxon jacket, or an Argyle in blue and rig it so you can swap out the silver buttons for plain as needed.
