I don't have any idea what it weighs, but I carry a lot less stuff than I used to. I have a sporran wallet with jus the essentials (driver's license, insurance card, credit card, and money), a handkerchief, and a change purse.
I try to wear other clothing with pockets for cell phone and such. Only if I am out for a long day in the woods or something do I carry a lot of stuff anymore.
And finally, I agree that where you wear it is important. I keep mine much higher than I used to.
Of course, some of us really need a heavier sporran . . . and then, some of us don't. 
ADDED: I also purchased a small belt pouch recently for those times when I need a little more stuff, but I haven't used it yet.
