All right, I finally listened to the whole thing. I have to say, I think the fellow at the end seemed to have forgotten about the United States and was only thinking about France in the late 18th century, or maybe Great Britain in the mid-17th century. I don't recall all those things happening in the US. Of course, we didn't actually have to depose our king, thank goodness. We merely had to gain our independence from him (and his parliament, which was not at that time favorable to our interests).
Without getting into the question of whether it is desirable or not—in the abstract, or to the majority of the citizens of the United States—for the United States to go back to a system of monarchy, this BBC program leaves completely open the question of how we'd go about it. Tradition and legitimacy are very important facets of the monarchy in other countries, but how would they be grafted into the US system? I mean, as far as I am aware, his Imperial Majesty, Emperor Norton I of the United States and Protector of Mexico, left no heirs.

Sadly, that is true; and since Bonnie Prince Charlie declined the Crown of the United States, I suppose that the Duke of Bavaria is out of the running as well... oh dear... I've just realized that the crown would, by default, go to the daughter of the last recognized king.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you.... (drum roll)....
Her Majesty Queen Priscilla, of the House of Presley of Tupelo, daughter and heir of the late King Elvis!

"Elvis was the King; we were all there when he was crowned." If anyone has a copy of the book "Rock Dreams," they can tell me who said that. Johnny Cash? Del Shannon?
I, however, was going to nominate Mrs. Ethel Shroake of 393A High Street, Leytonstone. I'll just leave it out there.

I hate to quibble, but Priscilla would be the Queen Mother, as Lisa Marie is Elvis's daughter.

You get a gold star for spotting the deliberate mistake.

Perhaps you had Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in mind MOR.

White, Black, and Rainbow (?) cockades... who will be the next Queen?
Lines seem to be being drawn between the camps: The Shroakians on one side, the Elvisians on the other, and somewhere, streaking across the Australian outback, the Priscillians are gathering a momentum of their own... (Good one Trefor!)

This has all the makings of a Star Wars v. Trekkie brawl.

I wouldn't count the Nortonians out just yet. You never know.
