Personally I would have preferred he had been created Duke of Clarence - the last holder of that office also being called William (later King William IV).
I thought Clarence would be the logical choice, but there was later Duke of Clarencethan the later William IV. Oldest Son of the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) Grandson of Queen Victoria, and 2nd in line for the throne at his birth. Unfortunately he may have added some baggage to the Clarence title before predeceasing both his father and Grandmother.

This connection is probably also why Queen Mary’s father, Prince Francis, became Marquess of Cambridge in 1916, having given up his German title Duke of Teck.
Perhaps George V felt unable to make him Duke of Cambridge because Francis was not a British royal, but wanted to keep a link to Mary’s (long deceased) grandfather, Prince Adolphus.

Most interesting thread, thanks for all of the contributing members for quite the intriguing read. I actually did have several questions pertaining to the new title bestowed upon Prince William and Kate Middleton, however, they have definitely been answered. Thank you!

    Yours aye,

Upon bumping into them on the street, I personally should be inclined to use the titles Baron and Baroness Carrickfergus.

But Trefor, then they'd be given Clarence House and where would the POW and Duchess of Cornwall live when they are in London?
