    how much curve in the front of a Sheriffmuir?

    I have a jacket that I want to convert into a Sheriffmuir, but I don't know how much to cut away from the front panels. Would somebody please measure their Sheriffmuir at the waist from the edge where the buttons are around the front of the side seam and let me know what that measurement is? Thanks.

    I don't see the curve you mean.

    Surely the cut-away depends on the size of the Inverness flaps.

    Any curvature to the front of those two is subtle. I believe dbh is thinking of one more like this, from Highland Clans:

    Ken Sallenger - apprentice kiltmaker, journeyman curmudgeon,
    gainfully unemployed systems programmer

    Two things happen with a Sheriffmuir:

    (1) the jacket is closed at the throat and hangs open in an inverted "V";
    (2) the jacket is shaped in front from the chest to the waist-- it is actually taken in and despite the buttons it isn't intended to be closed.

    To achieve the shape the cloth may be cut on the bias, allowing the fabric to follow the shape of the chest when the jacket is sewn together. These jackets require a lot of tailoring to look right and fit well; that's why they are expensive to have made.
