I have been watching for a few days because I am a n00b still at this stuff.

I think the OP may choose to wear any universal sett he chooses, of course. That he feels a particular connection to "this one" because his grandfather once served in the same regiment is a nice story to share over a wee dram or a pint, or quiet moment or whatever.

However, should the OP choose to wear say the USMC tartan because his grandfather had been a Marine, I think some people (there are no tartan police) might think it was/is a less than optimal decision. I imagine the number of US Marines who would recognize the USMC tartan is less than 1000. With my luck, if I were to don a USMC kilt (having no affiliation to claim) I would meet a real Marine the first time I wore that tartan in public. Not only would that Marine recognize the tartan, he would likely be inebriated beyond reason and spoiling for a fist fight. Earned never given and so forth.

M2c. Wear it, yes. Have a good story to tell, yes. Respect your grandfather, yes. Claim a personal connection to the Argylls, not so much.

FWIW I own kilts in my clan tartan only, except I have an inexpensive one in a universal sett for when I am grilling, and my eye on another universal sett in 22oz for cold weather.

The A&SH wear the Government tartan pleated to the blue line, and the Black Watch wear it pleated to the Green line.

I'm not sure if the A&SH pleats are 'boxed' (and if they are, they are a 'military box') but the 'Watch wear piped pleats - sewn as a box but not pressed as such.

The Calgary Highlanders are a member of the 'Argyll' Regimental Family in all but name and cap-badge.

Doubtless the Canadian and British regiments have their quota of pissed confrontational clowns, but in my experience relatives of current or retired soldiers(there is no such thing as an 'ex-Seaforth') are, however tenuously, members of the Regimental Family and their choice to wear the regimental tartan is accepted.

Sorry to Jump in, As an Argyll still serving after 26 years I thought it prudent to point a few things out. Although we are now known as the 5th battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland we are still The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 5th battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland or 5 SCOTS on Operations. The only thing in the new dress that we have left is the kilt. The tartan is based on the Argyll Officers Goverment No 1A and the pleats are boxed but we an SNCO;s and above have inherited the Black Watch Ribbons. As far as kilts go don,t listed to anyone or take any EXPERT!!!! advice. If you feel like a SCOT then be a SCOT and wear whatever kilt you want. Glad to hear that your family have served in this most Magnificent regiment.
