No, you're quite right, the newest batch from B&N are quite garish compared to earlier releases, I have a complete Shakespeare, Sherlock Holmes, Poe, and a few others and NONE are multi-coloured like this. They are all just "gold" embossed covers and spines.
The customer complaints re:typos appears to be based on a 2008 edition, so we'll have to see if they've corrected the 2011 printing.
