Ancient: Any Scotch that is older than myself.
I've found that most relationships work best when no one wears pants.

"Ancient of Days" - that is as ancient as it gets.

    Before you were born!
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

Certainly Ancient (coloured) tartans are more recent than Modern tartans.
As for when Ancient ended and when Modern began in history, you have had as many answers as there are theories on the subject.
My history lecturers stuck to the idea that the Modern period began with the Renaissance and the Reformation.
Whether you count the Middle Ages as Ancient or post-ancient is up to you, but having studied that period (an eventful one in Europe, what with three distinct stages of feudalism evolving), I prefer to regard this as an intermediate period.
On the other hand, many parts of Africa never experienced a Middle period, and went straight from Ancient (Stone Age or Iron Age) to modern (when the colonialists first arrived).
    Regards,
    Mike
