According to the Panalba site, "returning to Scotland in 1992. In 1995, he {Jamie Sempill} inherited one of Scotland's oldest titles and took his seat in the House of Lords". I am unaware of any Americans seated in the House of Lords. Is this possible? He did apparently work in the US for a short period, and IF he created a company here and then bankrupted it to avoid paying bills, he wouldn't be the first in any known country. A US corporation, possibly, I have no knowledge about it, but a Scotsman driving the bus. We have legitimate blame for quite enough of our own shenanigans without picking up the blame for others.
Also, in the US, if public money is involved, we tend to consider that all the invitation necessary to show up at the party. Hoops to jump through, maybe, but engraved invite unnecessary.

Tripleblessed.
The problem was that many of us did not know that the event even existed,it was not a matter of waiting for an invitation.
Well alright the past is past, let us all hope that lessons have been learnt and they need to be, so now is the time to look forward and hope that this 2014 event is going to be a roaring success.

As far as I know Sempill is a native Scot although he spends or has spent a lot of his time living and working in the USA.
As Jock said, let us learn from the past and ensure that the 2014 Gathering will be a success which can be enjoyed by us all.

I've gotten to the age in which I don't care to deal with the logistical headaches associated with popular events - large crowds, crying babies, overworked vendors, lack of parking, long queues, stock-outs, high prices, lack of hotel space, traffic jams... Keep the Gathering; I'll wait until another wonderful Spring, early in the tourist season, when I can (relatively speaking) have the place to myself. I love the rain, BTW.

I took a trip there in the month of November back in '97 and had a great time for the exact same reason.

I am afraid that I shall give the event a miss for the very same reasons.

Standing on the shore of the North Sea mid-March, in a light rain, about a 25-30 knot breeze, with at least a degree or three between you and freezing......not to be missed. If you haven't, arrange to do it. Or, above Aberfeldy, coming from Crieff, pull over and stand in the rain, bright sun on the mountains north of the Tay, the north bank all the way to the snowcaps in bright sun with you in the rain. We've all heard about the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow; I got a shots of a rainbow crossing the big open field between the road and Blair Castle, one with the bow ending on the castle. Traveling just two, no crowds, no lines, no shortage of rooms.
All the way from here, Jock, I can feel the eagerness you have for the Gathering to return. I give you my solemn oath here and now, before witnesses, the minute_no, the very second my invitation to the Stirling Gathering arrives, I will shoot you an e-mail and fax you a copy, so you'll know how to make your your reservations. Tenerife? Perpignan? Pisa? Tibet?

No, I don''t need to trouble you, I will just pop down to the river with rod in hand instead.

One can get the peace and solitude in Scotland any time but the excitement, the pagentry, the friendships and the sharing of knowledge such as happened at the Gathering 2009 are rare, exquisite treats.
I had feared it was a once-in-a-lifetime event, but now I am hoping there will be another.
This time I intend to meet each and every Clan Chief who attends and thank them for coming!!

and hopefully you will meet up with some xmarkers also, In 2009 I had hoped you could join our xmarks rabble who met inside the 2009 gathering on the Sunday afternoon!! It seemed to be an acute enigma that you would come all this way and then not stop by to stay hello.
