Wear any colour you like(apart from white) and wear the first pair of hose, of any colour, that come to hand when getting togged up and get on with life!
That's my thought, too! So much agonizing over something so small! That being said, I have found that sometimes, the hose you wear can really make the tartan pop. Forest green with the Colorado State looks spectacular. But unless you find that one color that really brings out the tartan, it doesn't really matter! Close your eyes, stick your hand in the drawer, pull out a pair, and get your bum dressed!

My favorite hose to wear are burnt orange, with my Caledonia tartan - there isn't so much as a hint of orange in this tartan, save where the yellow stripe intersects the red.

And I've even had my wife tell me "wear the orange ones... they look better" than the pair of "denim blue" that I specifically purchased to complement the Caledonia.
