Kilted on Scooter?
Hey guy (and the occasional gal),
How do you keep the kilt from flying up on a scooter or motorcycle? How do you keep from looking like a lady in a skirt as it flaps around on the sides as you ride? I just got a Yamaha Razz for commuting and would like to ride it around and to church but the kilt seems a bad idea for that activity.

By not riding a motorbike or scooter. We have debated this many times and I believe that the general consensus is that it is a bad idea.
There are many activities in life that require personal safety equipment, specialist or protective clothing. I would have thought that riding a motorbike was a prime example of one.
There are those who state that "If you can't do it in a kilt, then you shouldn't do it at all."
So, no swimming, welding, baking, grinding, firefighting, light or heavy engineering, no woodworking, no ceramics or pottery, no molten metals, no spray painting, no, well you get the idea.
It is hard enough on a push bike, leave alone a motorbike.

On a scooter, the best way is to sit down, and tuck the pleats under yourself from the left and from the right. The apron won't necessarily flip up, but I would say that until you try it yourself, it's hard to explain how to do -- just experiment a little until you get a technique that works.
Since most scooters (assuming we're talking about 50cc Vespa-style ones) don't get above 35mph or 60km/h (by design) so I don't usually have much of a problem with the apron flipping up at those speeds...

I used to long for a Vespa when I was a teenager, back when Italian movies showed off their continental (i.e., cool) look. Back then, even nuns in full traditional habits rode them.
I think that, as CDNSushi points out, they're not the kind of vehicle on which wearing a kilt should be a safety issue. To me, they would even add to the coolness factor. I guess maybe I'm still a teenager at heart.
I wonder if a bungee cord would help hold down the apron, though.

How about a brattie--that's one of the aprons the soldiers in the trenches of France wore during the First World War? It's just a canvas apron that would wrap around your kilt. Certainly not as "cool" as Galician would like, but functional, and it'd keep the dust off your kilt and sporran and serve as a rainfly, too.

But what about your sporran????
Sorry, no advice for the OP - I don't ride motorized two-wheel conveyances, and I haven't tried riding my bicycle in a kilt.

You could wear the sporran to the side like a drummer, but it still sounds like she would impede your vision, unless of course she were driving and you were on the pillion, and then it would be her skirts that might fly up!
Of course, for safety's sake, both of you should wear trews.

Some of the local school girls put a blanket on their laps, which covers their legs too... It's uncommon, but I've seen it done. Other gals simply just don jogging pants under their skirts and let the skirts just flap around in the breeze freely without worrying about exposing themselves...
But carefully tucking everything underneath you is by far the most economical way. And, yeah, the sporran helps. When I'm wearing my UK, I rely on a slightly different technique for the apron, but I tuck those pleats as well.

Didn't the Utilikilts website have a "mock commercial" featuring a guy riding a scooter in his UK? I believe it was titled "Call Me".
