2 buckled kilt..The problem I seem to have with them.

I saw in the previous thread many wishes for 2 buckled enclosure system for their tradiotional kilt instead of 3. 2 of the most highly respected kilt makers in the biz actually use this format as their standard (Matt & Dr.T), unless requested otherwise.
I have several kilts that have 2 buckles instead of 3 made by various makers and I CONSISTANTLY run into the same problem with them all. As I wear the kilt throughout the day, the apron will begin to skew a touch to the left to where I'm constantly pulling it straight. One might think its a sizing issue, but the kilts I have with this issue all fit perfectly in their day (unfortunately I'm still too fat to wear any of them....weights steadily dropping though, so it won 't be long). Anyway, I noticed that third strap always helps keep my aprons straight. A I alone with this issue?

From my limited experience, that may be because the two aprons aren't in alignment. From time to time, slide a finger or two inside and adjust the height and line of the inner to match that of the outer and it may help a fair bit.

Very interesting observation. Alex Scott also uses two-buckle design. They also have an additional row of fringe on the side of the apron.

I tried the 2 buckle design on a kilt for myself along with the proper apron shaping that we do on wool kilts. I had a SIMILAR problem to josh. My issue was that the fringed side of the apron curled up (forward) a bit when worn for a few hours. That never happened on any of my other wool kilts with 3 buckles.

While I (and pretty much any other kiltmaker) would gladly leave off the hip strap, I think I'll keep them on our kilts as 'standard'.

Never had either of those issues with any kilt I've worn, and they've all had just two straps and buckles.

I would tend to think some other factor is contributing.

I talked to my mom about this issue today and she says its because I have a big rear end and tree trunk legs that are working the material outward as I walk....Gee thanks Mom.

I don't have much to add to this conversation but my Auld Scotland kilt seems to have shrunk in my closet and makes me look lumpy in it.

When I undo the third buckle it looks perfect again.
I am going to wear my kilt at home Monday and leave the third buckle undone and see how it looks after a wile to see if I can contribute to this conversation further.

That's the thing about mothers - they tell you how it is!

The two strap system is the way for me. I've experience no problems.

And as Cowher noted above it does allow us to expand our kilt easier when we plumb out a tad.

I suspect that losing a bit more weight will solve the problem - the kilt that fits in the morning becomes a little bit too small as the day progresses and as the waist is held, something somewhere has to accommodate the extra volume.

I saw something similar when I was a bit too enthusiastic about my weightloss and made a kilt just a tad too tight.

Anne, your absolutely correct. I was on a medication for a long time and it made me put on massive amounts of weight. I am off the medicine and have lost much weight by that alone but now I need to diet.
Anyway. I wore my kilt pictured above around the house today and out fishing at a little secret spot out in the woods near me. I left the third strap undone and not only did it look better but it didn't budge.
