    Kited on horseback

    Please, no sidesaddle comments!!

Was thinking how great a trump card it would be to the other Clans if I rode out to the front at the Highland Games on a fine mount. Am an accomplished rider. Anyone ever done this. seen it done???

You mean like this? This was posted by Tobus on another thread.

Now to be a bit more serious.

As AZWildcat posted, Tobus occasionally rides kilted; though I don't think this is common now or in the past. The mark of a Highland gentleman, historically, were the trews (in addition to their other finery), and he would wear them to facilitate riding. That's not to say that those of wealth and status never wore the kilt, just that they were normally recognized as wealthy because the only reason to wear trews was if one owned a horse.

If you get the go-ahead from the event organizers and want to wear a kilt and ride, I say go for it. If you happen to have a pair of trews, even better.

I would love to see kilted clan processions on horseback. But it might be best to do the mounting and dismounting out of the public eye.

Plus, you'll get wrinkled pleats/aprons and horsehair on your kilt. I was bareback in that picture (about as literally as you can imagine), but even with a saddle, it would be a pretty dirty event for an expensive wool tank. But it would be grand!

Would be nice to form a Kilted Cavalry unit.

I also have a pic of our own Tristan in a UK Workman's on a huge horse, and a pic of a kilted guy from the Utilikilts photo gallery on a horse and another on a camel.

Couldn't agree more with the status side...but most watching may not be that tuned in. Be wary though, if you out-dandy your clan rep. or ranking leader-that's bad news. If you do go for it, I would recommend/stress scoping the path, and your on/off points. I have done a bit of riding in a great kilt, and didn't have that luxury. Oh, and tan undershorts. Trust me.
