I've got something similar. My grandfather is a Christy and the Christie family is loud orange & green and rather uncommon so it's expensive and hard to find. I was on a budget at the time. The Christie family is a sept of Farquharson. So I got my wedding tank in Farquharson. My grandmother is a Scott so I'm looking at getting a Scott B&W when I can. I recently learned that my name (Raughley) is actually Irish because way back in the 1700's a Raleigh changed it to hide after he got divorced so I'm looking at honoring that in some way in the future.

All my family came to America pre-revolution so while we have ties to Scotland, Ireland and France, our main family ties are to New England.

I am a Sharp, so as Sharps we are a sept of the the Stewart Clan. Most specifically the Stuart of Bute. I love all the Stewart Tartans. My favorite four would have to be in order:

    Stewart Old Sett
    Stewart Hunting
    Black Stewart
    Stuart of Bute

    The Weathered MacGregor...

It's an unappealing arrangement of loud, clashing colors. I'm sure, at one time, it was quite fashionable. I would bet that there are many who would say that it is still lovely. Not for me thanks. I prefer subdued, earthy tones like browns and greens, I own a Buchanan hunting, a black watch, a black Stewart, an acu cammo traditional, and a brown duck Utilikilt (for around the house and camping) I also have a no name great kilt that I wear to renaissance faires. I'm getting married this fall and my fiancee wants my kilt to be fall color themed. I am leaning toward MacAlister of Skye. This decision is 2 parts because at least it's a familial tartan and 1 part because it is relatively fall "ish" . I'm sure everyone has a favorite (or many) I am just curious what you ladies and gents lean toward and why. Do you wear your clan tartan or do you prefer "new" tartans such as national tartans or do you prefer a solid colored kilt?
You should check for "Weathered" colours in your tartan- I think Lochcarron has one of the better selections (but apparently not MacAlister).

I belong to the MacGregors, and thus (coupled with a serious lack of funds) I've "always" worn MacGregor. My first kilt was in the Modern colours, but I finally got a Weathered MacGregor 4yd box pleat from Matt Newsome (the best kilt EVER!) and I definitely love it! I've a Tank in "Hunting" MacGregor (aka MacGregor of Cardney) that I am very fond of as well.

I too am partial to the more muted, earth tone tartan colours, and the Weathered McIntosh (Mother's family) is another favourite of mine as well as the Hunting Stewart.

My favourite is "Norwegian Migration Period". But it's a custom weave, so I'm not sure I'll ever afford t wear it.

My kilt is a Duncan Modern and I really do like it the best. I think it's because it's not as complex in design and the colors suit me.

My favorite should be here on Monday, Campbell Ancient. I also have and Irish National from SWK.

On the Short list is the Clergy (for obvious reasons) and the Harris (a Welsh tartan, Moms maiden name is Harris.)

    Slainte,
    Rev.

I am of Clan Gunn via the sept Wilson.

I love the Gunn tartan not only because it's my clan...but i like the colors as well. There's options for weathered and modern that have different tones as well.
