I was in our local Highland wear shop the other day (McAllans) and chatting to the sales person, she said more people are buying a second kilt for casual evenings out and football matches. Their sales have gone up in their 13oz 8yd wool kilts over the last couple of years and is mainly in the age group 20 to 50. She also finds with their customers, they have 2 or more jackets, one black Argyle or PC and one/two tweed. She said they do not sell many white hose these days, black or navy is the most popular and lovat blue and bottle green next.

I too had only one kilt and only a black Argyll for many years. I branched out and bought a 2nd kilt (in colours as different from my 1st kilt as possible) and also got a tweed "day" jacket. My white hose are still lurking in the closet and will make an appearance whenever they come back into style (I'm not holding my breath on that).

Interesting about tweed v black jackets: a couple times recently I've piped at daytime events which were full of Scots who had flown over, and it being daytime I wore tweed... but I was the only one! Because all the Scots were wearing black Argylls or PCs. From these events it seems that many Scots, at least when they travel, bring only a black jacket.

Being a youngish Scot (in my twenties) I get to chip in here. On the whole tweed is considered old a combination of old fashioned and/or for old(er) people, I own three kilt jackets the standard PC a black Argyle with silver buttons and a black one from TFCK which came with my kilt which I suppose would be classed as an Argyle too, it has black horn type buttons.

Now I rarely have an occasion to wear a jacket but I see them in the order of the plain one for looking smart, the Argyle for weddings etc during the day and the PC for black tie do's. It might not be totally 100% traditional but it does me well enough.

As an aside most people over here only have one kilt outfit usualy the PC white hose etc bought from the local kilt shop so when they encounter an occasion when they are wearing a kilt the pull out and stick on the whole shebang.
