They probably said the same thing about pants for women back in the 1950's - certainly they will never catch on....why would women want to wear pants??

If kilts never catch on it will make absolutely no difference to me. No, that's not quite true, I don't neccessarily want kilts to catch on. I used to be confused (but flattered) when people would tell me that I wear the kilt well. I didn't understand what they meant. Now that I've been to a few Highland games and seen what some people wear and call a kilt and how some people can wear a perfectly good kilt but make it look like rubbish I understand. When somebody expresses an interest in the kilt I enthusiastically encourage them and offer what little help or advice I can. I do not, however, want every Tom Dick and Harry putting on a kilt without care and knowledge simply because "it's what men wear"! Let the sheep continue to wear trousers and leave the kilts to those who are passionate about them and care enough to learn about what they are doing.

    Jamie

p.s. as I've posted before, I'm not allowed to wear my kilt at work except for special events either, but it has made me that much more aware of the value of the kilt for me and made me even more dedicated to wearing the kilt and fostering kilt wearing among the cognoscenti like all you folks here.

You certainly have a knack for asking a question that is sure to get an answer or two.

    I'd get a new job.

You worry about the oddest things.

Wear the kilt on your day(s) off.

I do work 12 hour days on the weekend... lemme tell you that gets old FAST, the only reason I still hold that job is because it is only on the weekends, and it pays pretty well for 2 days a week. My other job is a lot less stressful. But between the two, I DO only have one day off a week. That hasn't stopped me in my continual acquisition of kilts.

    Rex -

You really have no idea. If you could see inside my mind you would be truly frightened. I have on occasion given close friends a tiny peek at what goes on in there and they said please.....don't tell us any more.

I don't know.....wearing pants all day long while I am living my life (at work) and then dashing home to wear my Utilikilt for two hours while I watch TV seems sort of silly - I mean, what's the point? I work for a living and this is where I spend the majority of my life.

For now I will continue to walk through every mall in the Phoenix area and attempt to get kilts accepted as a male garment for the 21st century. This last weekend since it was a long weekend I did four malls! On 1-1-2008 I am planning to re-examine this.

If the kilt still cannot be worn at work or be accepted in public as a "real" male garment then I might return to baggy cargo shorts. Not as comfortable, but I won't have people bursting out in laughter when they see me or yelling rude comments from moving cars.....and I won't need to worry about windy days or glass escalators.

I mean, swimming upstream is okay as a challenge and an adventure but there are other things I would like to accomplish in life as well.....especially if there is no way to win the battle.....

On the other hand, you guys say that in 14 months kilt wearing will be second nature to me......at least for the few hours each day that I'm not at work. No, I'm not going to get a new job so I can wear my kilt. I don't want to change, I want the world to change.

Perhaps that is not realistic, but I think it's happening slowly. Someone mentioned some guy on the cover on People magazine in a UK. That's got to count for something....

What else are you wearing or doing when you are in a kilt? I have never heard of those reactions to a guy in a kilt, even a Utilikilt. I think we have all had the odd comment spoken by the weasel in the speeding away vehicle, but those reactions seem pretty extreme even for conservative parts of the US. The only time I have ever heard any similar reactions was to the guy on Tom's that liked the ladies skating dresses I wouldn't have expected that for a Utilikilt.

Kilts catch on in the unlikliest places!

I wore my kilt all the time during my visit to the Scottish Highlands in July and only saw three other kilties the whole week.

Went to Cardiff Mardi Gras last weekend and counted at least 25 guys in kilts!

OK so Mardi Gras was a special event and you wouldn't see that number in the Welsh Capital every day but it's s sign that quite a few people have them stashed away and the need is to persuade them out of the "special events only" mentality.

I wear mine (now have choice of 3) at least 3 days a week without the need for an excuse. Today I had an excuse it being my birthday but I never tire of finding reasons why I should the rest of the time either!
