MoR,
Because an updated nod toward tradition is sometimes more practical / safer / useful than either following that tradition to the letter or letting it die out all together.

I can't tell you how many times I've been kilted and wished I had my toffee hammer.

I know a Scotswoman from Aberdeen who makes a wonderful toffee. But, you don't need a hammer as it's soft and delicious! Is there more than one kind of toffee made in Scotland? Scots?

Ted, you're neutral on toffee until you've had the real thing.

OFF TOPIC (I apologize)
Does anyone else keep reading this thread's title find themselves imagining Tom Cruise looking lovingly at a Rab Gordon Sgian Dubh and saying:
"You complete me"

This way of the world, the carrying of a knife of any sort used to be a non issue and when I used to smoke a pipe, more often than not, I would carry my pipe in my hose top instead, when wearing the kilt. These days carrying a knife is regarded with grave suspicion by the law and rightly so, I am afraid, but I have never heard that common sense has not been applied by the police when it comes to carrying any sort of sensible knife when wearing the kilt.

In Seattle, the display of a dreaded tobacco pipe would elicit a similar bit of suspicion, if not disdain.

Hey, I'm a pipe smoker myself so I'm with you!
And that is a beautiful blade you have there. Can I ask where you picked it up?
