Would you mind commenting of the frequency of kilt wear - if that makes any sense. My limited experience tells me Scots save their kilts for very special occasions - that is is rare indeed to see a "kilt in the wild." Am I far off base here? What would the locals say about those of us who wear our klits almost daily?
There are a few here in Scotland that wear the kilt 24/7 and to my knowledge I know one(not counting xmarkers). You are correct in thinking that most "real" kilts are kept for special events. A cheaper skirt type thing may be kept for walking the dog, or, Tartan Army manoeuvres, etc.. What do the locals think about permanent kilt wearers; well up here with the midgies, they would think that you would be stark staring mad! What they think about people in other parts of the world wearing the kilt daily, I not sure that most of the locals would believe it ever happens.

Jock the answer to your midgies problem is lavender. The little blood suckers hate the stuff. Get some lavender spray and do round the hem etc, saves a awkward midge bite. Failing that stand next to a woman they prefer women for some reason much to the wife's annoyance. I have had 1 midge bite since the summer began. (probably the only person in rural Scotland to get away with it)

I dont know about the Saltire kilt, its a bit tacky, however the pipe major should have a conversation with those 3 about how to Iron a Shirt.
And Jock I agree 100%, I myself have to refrain from comment at some of the "what do you guys think" picture posts, if people want to wear the Kilt slightly "off kilter" then of course its their business, however I think most people are aware of my views on respect for symbols of Highland culture. I dont think its a case of snobbery or thinking "Scots know best!" if you see how some of the pipe bands here are turned out its obvious the some Scots "dont know best" . I think if people bore in mind that the Kilt is a specific cultural symbol as well simply an item of clothing.

I have to say that kilts are reserved for "special" occasions in Scotland, anytime when we would dress up to honour our heritage. This is probably down to simple expediency in that it is much easier to dress in the dreaded p@nts for normal day to day business. Also people nowadays tend to dress down anyway and it makes a statement when you dress up in your finery whenever possible. And what better statement can you make than to wear your kilt in a tartan you are proud of?

You are right, of course, and there are many in this sceptred isle who regularly wear boxer shorts emblazoned with the union jack. They not only sit upon it but probably s**t (rhymes with sit) upon it also after a surplus of falling down water. The only thought I do have, however, is whether it is more disrespectful to sit upon the tartan of your clan? Remember that we in Scotland have a more ambivalenet attitude to national flags than some other nations, particularly as we see our Saltire flying below the union Jack so often.

I've always wondered at that (hoisting the saltire beneath the Union Jack), given that the entire field of the Union Jack is the saltire of Scotland. I have always assumed it had to do with a reluctance to erect a second flag pole (probably due to costs and planning issues), or ignorance of the fact that in Scotland the saltire may be flown instead of the Union Jack.
