Re: Whatever has happened to manners
I always open doors for ladies, allow ladies to go first, say "please" and "thank you," and I take off my hat indoors. There are, of course, differing rituals and practices, but where I come from, that's the way it's done.

Re: Whatever has happened to manners
Well I am certainly in a deadly, evil, vicious, awful sort of mood today. No idea why. All I know is that I am feeling like little miss snotty. I opened the door to walk in and three girls walked out of the same door so I had to stand there with the door open for them. It was polite on my behalf, but who knew that in my head,I wanted to walk right in, knock them all out of the way, and keep walking.
And ive also really had it with people who text and walk at the same time. They walk about .0000001 MPH and somehow manage to block you when you are trying to pass them. Some girl, in the same class, (and I probably only noticed this because I was already breathing fire) was inching down the aisle between the seats while texting and another girl had to stand behind her and wait for her to inch into her seat before she could pass her. Oooyyyy vayyyy! People are so oblivious to what goes on around them.
Im being the girl we are all talking about today Snotty Miss Meghan and Her Bad Day Blues.

What about when people are 'texting' and walking *towards* you. Recently, I was walking down the sidewalk (pavement, although here that sounds like the street) and seeing this guy walking towards me, I figured he'd move over so he wouldn't brush into me (I was already on the right-hand side of the sidewalk). He never looked up from his hand-held device until he was practically right in front of me and I said something to alert him. He looked up and avoided bumping into me.
With the preoccupied attention directed towards texting (not to mention listening to music and searching through a billion songs), it's a miracle some of these people haven't been run over by a bus or car yet.
(I guess I'm a hand-held device luddite)
I'm probably too observant of crazy drivers and their actions and I've had some people almost run me down (on my walk light) ... but then again , I may in some strange way attract bad drivers into my zone (or so it seems). The people not paying attention probably somehow mesh into the general scheme of traffic flow.

I cant text and walk at the same time nor can I drink and walk at the same time or eat and walk at the same time. Just doesn't work.
And people are dumb. I am baffled by how oblivious people can be to their own surroundings.

Agreed. I refer to such folk as walking cheeseburgers, and two-legged predators can smell them from miles away.

If you don't like people who text and walk, please don't come to Japan...
A typical sight is this: (imagine if you will)... Ditzy teen girls, riding bicycles in the rain, balancing an umbrella in one hand, texting with their other, wearing miniskirts, riding against traffic (on the wrong side of the road), and not very straight I might add, while chanting: "Samui, samui, samui...." (Means: "cold" in Japanese).

Re: Whatever has happened to manners
I saw something the other day that I never thought was possible. A teen, riding his bike with one hand on handlebar, the other arm/hand wrapped around a full-sized surfboard, while talking on his phone which was held beneath his face and his shoulder. It did not end well.

Is there supposed to be a surfboard or a Bluetooth headset somewhere in that picture?
