Mine began back in the days of the CB radio. You all remember CB's. That's what people like us did before there was this interweb thing.
Anyway, before I had my own radio, I was sitting with my friend who was talking on his CB. Someone on the radio asks who that is they hear in the background. My friend whispers to me "Don't use your real name." so I just said the first thing that popped into my head; "Major Mudd", which was a kids show in Boston in the 60's; which I really liked when I was a kid... living near Boston... in the 60's.
Anyway, it stayed with me when I finally got my own CB and my friend just shortened it to Mudd.
Since then, whenever I've needed an alias on the Net, I've aways used Mudd. (Not the character from the original Start Trek, as most people guess).
BTW, that's the real Major Mudd in my avatar.

I got my handle in the last century during the dot com/dot bomb days (daze?)
I ran with a small herd O' geeks. The elder of the tribe and the weakest programmer. A good troubleshooter/rubber meets the road man though. I could fix things and make them work when some of the stronger programmers could not, and when the best of us was short on time.
There is an old script floating around in the public domain called formmail.pl written in perl. Seems like I was a formmail modifier for a solid year. Then Handle Perldog suggested itself. Of course somebody had taken the AIM nic already.
My boot camp company number was 007. So Perldog007 it has been for about a decade now.

cool thread
Hi folks
My nick reflects my fascination with all things Japanese (e.g. History, food, language, religion, martial arts, etc). "Hachiman" is the Japanese Shinto god of war and peace, and his shrines are often found guarded by foxes (one of my favourite animals).
Coincidentally, Japanese mythology has a "fox spirit" called a 'Kitsune', which love the small, sweet rice-and-tofu rolls called "inari" rolls - also a big favourite of mine.
Anyway, so I needed a nick online when I started chatting on IRC... and Hachiman has been mine ever since.
Cheers
Hachiman

Mine started when I first started on e-bay and needed to take an internet username.
I wanted Cessna152 after the 'plane I learned to fly on, but it was already taken.
Then I tried to choose Towser after a wee balgair or scottie dog which my mother made many years ago from a World War II pattern for making toys from old clothing. Despite being a very simple stuffed toy with buttons for eyes and a piece of felt for a tongue Towser became the family mascot and my mother ensured his longevity by re-covering him in fresh fabric of a similar pattern to the original in 1987 about five years before she died.

The usename Towser was already taken too.
So I tried running the two names together as Cessna152towser which was accepted and has been my internet handle ever since.

I've had a fascination with the canal era of transportation for quite a few years. I read everything on canals I can get my hands on. My wife and I travel to canal sites. I have started doing educational talks on canals.
When it came time to chose a forum name, the first thing to pop into my head was Canawler. Canawler was the name used to describe those who made their livings on the canal boats of the 19th century.

I grew up near the Deep Creek locks part of the Dismal Swamp Canal linking Norfolk, Va to Elizabeth City, NC. What's so interesting is both areas were bustling areas of commerce in the 18th century which no longer exist.

My last name (Kizzier) rhymes with "desire." People invariably mis-pronounce it. I usually correct them by saying, "Kizzier. As in A Streetcar Named Kizzier."
On a depressing side note, I've found that people younger than me often don't understand the reference.
So much for classic American literature....

Sciuropterus was one of the taxonomic classifications used for flying squirrels back in the 1700's.
It roughly translates to "Squirrel-wing", an apt description. I have an assortment of flying squirrels and chipmunks as pets, I really think they are fascinating animals. I do educational demos with my flying squirrels, they have even been on the local news.

My 1745 reenactment persona is Donald Robertson of Woodsheal, hence "Woodsheal." He led the Struan branch of Clan Donnachaidh during the `45, because his cousin the chief (Alexander Robertson of Struan) was too old (70+)....
