Here's my problem with the whole mess. I've worked in a dingy bar in Philly. I've NEVER seen a kilted patron. I HAVE seen patrons expose themselves. We also had an incident where a man grabbed a woman's hand and forced it inside his pants.
ALL patrons were wearing pants.
ALL patrons were wearing undergaments.
One patron unzippered his fly then removed his "product"
One went to the restroom and returned both pants and undergarments removed.
One failed to "return all goods to proper place" upon exiting the restroom.
With above information, should pubs now refuse addmittance to all men? Refuse to allow men to use the restroom? I agree with CDNSushi... where do we stop? And I can't tell you how many times I've seen a woman on a barstool with no undergaments on, with a skirt MUCH shorter than a kilt. Ironically, I got quite a show from a drunk football fan at a Kildare's once during an Eagles game.... We shouldnt' be singled out, because it can happen anywhere to anyone. If someone wants to expose themselves, they will. Kilt, no kilt, undergaments, no undergarments.. doesn't matter.
BTW- I have been to Japan and have been denied enterance to an establishment in Kobe because I was non-Japanese. Actually the girl giving out the ads by the door refused to even look at me. Very interesting experience.

JPO, did you give your local ACLU a call?

That is a shame indeed. I'd go with what shawhighlander said. I have worn my kilt to many a pub and have never run into someone who did not appreciate it. But your best bet is to follow your hunch and stay away from chain pubs.

The web site says that all staff were trained in Ireland. Can the management say that now? maybe they should remove that comment.

IMHO, the incident that instigated this policy was an overreaction on the part of the pub.
Just because one person made an error in judgement, and alcohol was certainly involved, as is the case with ALL pubs/bars, the lot shouldn't be punished.
See, here's the problem: ONE idiot made a mistake. Instead of punishing the source of the problem, they punish the lot...Huh? Sounds like Basic Training all over again.
I think a simple, no BS policy that if your private bits are exposed intentionally, you will be banned from the establishment, forever, and if serious enough, the authorities called and charges filed. Simple, non-gender specific and to the point. But a blanket, knee-jerk reaction is not the best course of action, ever.
This is an ongoing problem with our society. A person makes a mistake, then ALL have to pay for it. Stupid.

I sent a second e-mail to the GM of the Kildare's in question and posed a couple of questions to him: (1) If a guy who is, say, Latino, comes in and causes a problem, will they ban Mexicans?, and (2) if I guy gets blotto and starts a fight, will they stop serving alcohol?
I explained that I wasn't trying to be an @ss but just trying to get them to think about what could be happening here.
The GM got right back to me and said he understood. He said that, ideally, the bouncer should've let our main man jpo in and just let a manager know rather than make a customer mad and, apparently, make a lot of kilted potential customers avoid his bar.
I think they know they've messed up and are trying to make nice. Problem is, it may be too little too late.
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!

This familiar??
HARTMAN: Private Pyle has dishonored himself and dishonored the platoon! I have tried to help him, but I have failed! I have failed because you have not helped me! You people have not given Private Pyle the proper motivation! So, from now on, whenever Private Pyle f***s up, I will not punish him, I will punish all of you! And the way I see it, ladies, you owe me for one jelly doughnut! Now, get on your faces!
HARTMAN (to PYLE): Open your mouth!
He shoves the jelly doughnut into PYLE's mouth.
HARTMAN: They're paying for it, you eat it!
HARTMAN turns to the recruits.
HARTMAN: Ready . . . exercise!
The platoon does push-ups.
RECRUITS (chanting in cadence):
One, two, three, four!
I love the Marine Corps!
One, two, three, four!
I love the Marine Corps!
One, two, three, four!
I love the Marine Corps!
One, two, three, four . . .

I don't know if I have anything to add but - If this were to happen to me, I would immediately politely ask to see the manager without hesitation. That type of question should not be asked - or answered. No smart-alec response would help or have a positive outcome. The door-person was obviously not trained in Ireland or anywhere near the Brittish Isles.
I would have been more surprised, and put off, at the question than the refusal of admittance. I would never respond to a person making an inappropriate comment, or question, about my attire - no matter what it was. Just walk by and smile. In fact, if I lived in your area I would return there with you (kilted) and see what if any questions were asked.
