I do a Gunn Modern as well, by A&J Scott and Co. Aberdeen, (the precursor to Alex Scott) 16oz. its 57 years old and looks great.
I am sure it's the real thing as it came to Canada in a boat with my Dad in the 50s, I dont think you can get any more authentic.

My avatar shows me in my 13 oz. hunting MacIntosh, made be Burnetts & Struth in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. I'd consider it a "real, hand-sewn kilt".

    traditional hand sewn kilt

I own 2 different 8 yard traditional kilts: MacGregor Ancient from House Of edgar, and MacFarlane Hunting Modern from Strathmore. The house of Edgar tartan are a little more stiff, whereas the Strathmore is a little softer. Lochcarron by far is the softest out of the 3 mills. Mine are all in 13 ounce Medium Weight material, perfect for where I live in maine. I think the swing has nothing to do with the mill. It depends on how you take your hip measurement. The looser you make your hip measurement, the more swing you have. The Casual kilts have less pleats than the Traditional kilts, and also have less swing because they have less material. Both of these kilts are hand made, not machine stitched

P.S. Also if you order an 8 yard kilt, I would make my waist measurement a little less compared to a casual kilt, because you may have 2-3 yards more than a casual kilt has.

I have an 8 yard kilt of worsted wool in Russell Tartan, hand-made in Scotland. I don't know whether hand-made equates to hand stitched though?

I saved up, and ordered a 16 oz MacGillivray Modern, which is on order. Probably get to me in July. It is a Rare Select Tartan and out of stock. The Good news is that it will come

Call me a snob if you like, but I personally wouldn't wear anything but a traditional hand crafted, hand stiched kilt.

I currently have 3 to choose from Taylor tartan, Ardbeg tweed and Inveraray tweed, and 2 in the pipeline Tyneside Scottish and the Isle of Skye in Harris tweed.

I was just wondering if you could clear something up for me?You talk about Ardbeg and Inveraray tweeds are these,as I suspect, actual tweeds as opposed to tartans, and might they also be "estate tweeds"?I used to stalk (deer) with a real tough stalker in Perthshire,he had served in the SAS,who would wear his estate tweed kilt in all weathers and regardless of conditions on the hill. Now, in my experiance tweed kilts are almost a rarity; certainly in the stalking world.
