Re: The Kilt Kops
After reading the posts about how to wear the kilt I have come to a very obvious conclusion ( Yes I was Cop 13 years ).
As the knowledge in a certain field increases, the ability to share it with tact decreses.
The only way to wear a kilt, is secure around your waist so it does'nt proceed to the area around your ankles. Any other comments, just repeat "Sod Off".
Yes I have a few blue ribbons!

Not nearly as egregious as needlessly humiliating a fellow guest by drawing negative scrutiny to how they're dressed. Period.

Regarding "dress" tartans, this past thread might be of some interest:

Perhaps I should get one in Black Watch, or "the government sett" considering my different jobs...

He promptly told me that I was improperly dressed. That one only wears a dress tartan with a Prince Charlie. I always though any kilt could be dressed up or down depending on the accessories one wore. Did I commit a dastardly sin?
You were perfectly in the right. He was perfectly wrong.

I agree with the comments that he was wrong and entirely out of line to chastise you. I also think that you were NOT improperly dressed.
There was a time, though, when hunting tartans were not generally preferred for evening wear. Perhaps he did not mean "dress tartan" in the way that we think about it, but meant "non-hunting". I'm not trying to support the guy, but just pointing out where he may have been coming from.
Just so you know, I wore my Hunting Mackintosh kilt with my PC at my wedding .
