The pockers are behind both aprons the snaps hold the two aprons together. You have some weird mistake.

On the other hand, while I can't vouch for Steve's Freedon Kilts, they aren't out of the price range the $185 is in Canadian dollars about $150 US. $155 for a Mocker and PK w/ inside pockers and rear pocket is $130.

Thank you all for the great input.

I'm sorry if I was vague on my intent of the buttons. I was intending them to be cosmetic in function on the PK.

With such high opinions of UK,Freedom and PK this is going to be a tough decision. (I had not realized Freedom was a Canadian company so they are back in the running.)

I can't not be of too much help, as i don't own any comtemporary style kilts, but I have seen UKs in person, and I have had a chance to get a really good look at Freedom kilts when I met Steve at a craft fair. If it was me (which it isn't) making this decision, I would go for the Freedom kilt. Steve puts a ton of work and detail into his kilts, and they are very well made garments.

As for PK, I have not seen one, but the reviews of Jeff and his product on this site has been outstanding. While I don't mean to knock the bigger company, it seems like Utilikilts (for all their successes) has been having a few issues lately, why not give a harder look at the little guys that put their heart into it and do all the work themselves. Just my opinion.

Let us know which one you decide to go with, and what you think once it arrives.

You'll like either one you get. I have 3 UKs (original), and a lined PK. Really like the PK in winter. I like the hem on the PK better than the serged edge on the UK. Both are good companies and make quality garments.

Have you though about the Jonesing period? If Utilikilts have the colour and the size that you desire, you can have it in 2 weeks.

Pittsburgh Kilts are Freedom Kilts are made to order, and the Jonesing period may be longer.

That being said, I have 3 Utilikilts and have seen the Freedom Kilts at a Crafs Fair last December.

Freedom Kilts are very well made and they are heavy. You can definately feel the weight on those babies.

Utilikilts are designed and made different. The Front Apron is not as wide as the Pittsburgh or Freedom kilts, and they definately give you a more comteporary look to it. I definately dig those snap buttons and I don't have any problems. The snap buttons problem is exclusively to the Survival Model.

UK's are hemmed now, they stopped serging them at least 18 months ago.

    Thanks Colin and Gary.

I'm right there with you about looking out for the small shops. Also with the long wait on UK and the snaps having problems pulling loose I think I've whitled UK out.

I'm glad you mentioned the difference in the edge treatment as those are the finishing touches I feel make a huge difference.

The bad news is that while kicking around the $100+ options I've begun to wonder about just going with the SportKilt option for $60 while I test drive the Kilt choice. I'm honestly surprised at how difficult the choice is. Which one to invest in is truly a harder choice than whether to wear a kilt at all.

I'll post back as I prepare to pull the trigger and let everyone know how it goes. The other bad part is I'm already jonesing and haven't even placed an order yet.

One last caviat though. This will be mainly an outdoor garment (yard work, camping, hiking, hanging round the house...). I'm tempted by the color versatility of the plain solid color twills (Kahki, Forest or Putty kilt with just about any other shirt color) but also think I might be better off just going with the Forest MARPAT. I spent many years ironing camies so a little pressing doesn't bother me.

Thanks again for all the input.

Ron's snap problem was rather untypical of most UK owners. Out of the many many UK owners, the problems have been very few and far between. It doesnt make you feel any better when YOURS has a problem, but it doesnt seem to be an issue overall.

That being said, I would say DONT get the Sportkilt as your first kilt choice. I think you'll be horribly dissapointed in the experience. Its not that they make a bad product, because they dont. Its just that the sportkilt is really not designed to be an everyday wearing kilt. Its designed for highland athletes to wear during the games, or for for people to wear while changing in public, etc.. Its not a bad kilt to have in your collection, especially if you get it for its intended use. I dont think its a good first kilt though. Its a poor example compared to the PK, UK, or FK type of everyday kilts.

I second that! Save the cash and get the better product first. You will have a better kilt experience if you are wearing quality.
