as a scot Ive never been offended by anyone who wears a Kilt, as long as they do so with pride!!!!our culture is a gift to the world and Im thrilled that highland wear is so popular.
What most scots dont like is our national dress being "hijacked" by the "gay" community like Jean paul gautier, this suggests that people who wear Kilts are gay or frustrated cross dressers, when of course Kilts are for everyone!!
its not meant as an insult to the gay community, but it would be a shame if our national dress was turned into a symbol for homosexuality, this makes it harder for people to wear the kilt outside scotland. as people assume its some kind of skirt
as for Modern "kilts" like utikilts Im personelly not as keen and I dont think I would wear one but Im thrilled for the people who do, 21st century kilts do some cool stuff, but Im a traditionalist myself I love the Tartans.
I hope no-one will feel Im in any way criticising or insulting any of our gay members , I respect 100% your sexuality, just making a point.

Thank you for your insight highlander_Daz.
Graham, does your 4 yard gunn have the USA Kilts badge on it. May be why he mentioned Americans. I have only had a few poor comments, but they are usually from teenagers with the pants around their knees, and their arses hanging out.
There was a Scot (chris from Edinborugh) at kilts night last Saturday night. Nice guy. I think he was a bit suprised to see so many other people in kilts, as he had no idea it was Kiltsnight, and had hired a kilt to impress the ladies. Not once did he make comment about any of the kilts their that evening (traditionals, Bear kilts, stillwater kilts, Utilikilts, etc).

Welcome to the site, man! Good to have you on-board.
Don't sweat comments around here. We've gone through the antagonistic jabs, side-sweeping judo kicks, and backhanded-slaps enough so that we can recognize a legitimate comment. Your comments are taken for what they were delivered.
There's a HUGE mix of "traditionalist" and "liberal" kilt owners here, so we know to keep it civil. As different as our social and personal lives may be... we have enough respect to appreciate fellow kilt-wearers here.

A "gift to the world"...I like that. It says a lot for the Scots as a people that they are willing to give their culture, specifically in this case, the kilt & tartan to the world -- but, the Scots have given so many of it's sons & daughters to the world, so it is fitting. Or Robert Burns. Scotland's native son & greatest poet -- truly one of the few "citizens of the world" and a citizen of every country where Scots & their descendants are found.
Daz, great observation and insight!
Cheers, ![Cheers!](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_beer.gif)

I agree with cajunscot...I feel sorry for his wife.
"An insult to the Scots"... I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the logic behind that one.

I've only had two confrontations by native Scots and both were very positive. This guy was just a grump, I'd wager, and they have those in every culture.
Americans are ruining Scottish heritage? Ha!

Miserable is the word that come to mind when I here a story like this.
I have encountered a number of Scots, while kilted, and have only got positive comments and friendly conversation.
Graham, thanks for taking one for the team.

You know, I'm quite amused by this, as I left the shop I said to myself 'if only that man knew that his rude comment was going to be the topic of conversation all around the world tonight...'
and it was!!
I shall be interested to see the encounter influences getting the job.
Colin, there was no badge on the kilt, the reference to USA was completely out of the blue. Maybe he saw Formula 50, or whatever the film was called. (I thought the black actor in the kilt looked terrific)
highlander_Daz, welcome to the board and thanks for your comments.
Glen, naturally I immediately thought of you, the Coffee Shop King
Thanks Jimmy and all for you input. It's great to have such a support group.
