I only have one problem with Ciltman's site, he left out the great Welsh name of Edwards, my mothers side of the family. We do indeed have a family tartan too. Ah well.

Welcome Mike -I love Wales I vist Porthmadog about once a year for a break at Black rock sands, Ive never seen anyone in a kilt however it is very windy in that part of Wales!!! The Welsh are very much an example of how to keep true to your culture-all the road signs amongst other things are in Welsh as well as English, maybe Scotland should look to Wales for inspiration !!

Jewddha ... I can always call in to the Welsh Tartan Centre and check anything out if you want me to.
Highlander .. Its great you enjoy coming to Wales, if you could make it further south next time you could certainly meet up with a kilted welshmen and have a few beers. Wales is still on a high from winning the triple crown by the way.

Thanks Highlander_Daz for the warm welcome! Yes, Wales is one of the best kept secrets in the British Isles, very beautiful and still, in spite of many attempts to make it otherwise,.. Welsh.
You live in a pretty fantastic locale yourself (Inverness), I'm indeed jealous.
I have a great many Scottish, Welsh, and bit of Irish as well as German names in my family, so I have a vested interest in a rich ancestry to say the least.
As far as whether the Welsh ever wore a form of kilt, or had any Tartans to speak of, I look at this rather like the modern Native American Indian dress and pow wow culture: Although the original tribes varied tremendously in their individual customs, designs, language, and just about everything else you can imagine, they have evolved into a common, shared lore and symbology over time, leading to the Pow Wow dress we see so often today.
Those of us of Celtic/Norse/Pictish etc. ancestry have elected to do much the same of late, and thus we see Irish and Welsh Tartans, "Clan" symbols etc being created and used albeit borrowed in part or as a whole from cultural "cousins".

I was over the moon when the Welsh won the triple crown, not least of course because it meant that England didn't!!!, but they deserved it -a superb team who I think can go on and win the world cup. well done !!
I really do love Wales, Ive been down as far as Aberystwyth, and I would urge any overseas visitors to the UK not to neglect Wales as part of a tour-especially for Scottish history buffs the Castles in North Wales were all built by Longshanks-and whilst he was a complete +%^&*(%)) he knew how to build castles!!! Harlech castle is stunning!!!

I do that with 'kilt' (with a k) far too often, since it's a word I use on a daily basis. I live in fear that one of these days I won't catch the typo in some important business communication! Worst of all would be to have it in an email to a customer...'Your new **** should be ready by next week...' A good reason to use spell-checker!

I was recently at a trade show where the Collinses of the Welsh Tartan Centre were exhibiting. I noticed that kilt was spelt with a 'k' on the poster in from of their stall, so when I stopped there, I remarked on it. Tony Collins said it was so people would know what they were talking about! Maybe also so they won't get double-takes when the mind transposes letters to a more familiar word -- ?!? Though I suppose, from an advertising standpoint, that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing!
