Hangng Kilts
When I first began to wear a kilt, I was told to fold it as if it were being worn, then again, in half, with the pleats on the outside, and clip it into a standard clamp-type skirt hanger. I've never had any problems with wrinkles using this method, either with acrylic Stillwater kilts or with 8 yard tradditional kilts. And I notice that Matt recomends it in his advice to new kilt wearers article. One possible caveat: living as I do in the Mohave Desert, all my kilts are light weight, 11 or 12 oz fabric.

I saw a kilt hanger on the Piper's Cove website that is 14 inches long, look under "New Products". It looks like a standard pants type clamp hanger. It is designed to go through the belt loops in the back of the kilt. Look at www.piperscove.com.
My kilt waist is 42 inches, I store in on a clamp hanger with the apron folded on the inside and the pleats on the outer side. The regular pants hangers are a bit short for a large kilt.

Be very careful about hanging a kilt with the hanger inside the "belt loops", I ripped bot the loops loose on my kilt that way.

Here's how I do it
I bought a 3-pack of 11" cedar pants hangers from Wally-World, price around $3.00.
I fold my kilt in half, clamp a hanger on each end and one in the middle. I usually run the clamps through the belt loops. Then I fold the kilt into thirds and hang it.

My solution was to go to the 'Dollar' store and buy 6 standard pants hangers at $0.50 each. Since I have a woodworking shop, it was a simple matter for me to take the hangers apart, cut my own custom 16" slats from scrap lumber, and then mount them on the metal hooks. To add a little bit of extra holding power, I secured a strip of that non-slip drawer lining to the slat with double sided tape. Works great!

I was going to post exactly the same thing, but then I read this posting. It just goes to show how hard it is to have a really new idea. I have to say, though, that I did not simply take the cheep globally sourced hangers apart, I had much more fun using a vice and applying bending loads. I built the slats out of scrap oak, as it is quite stiff. I finished them using orange shellac and finally used self stick felt strips on the faying surfaces.

niche market
Seems like there's a niche market here - hangars large enough for kilts...particularly leather kilts.
I've seen hangars at the games that are made to hang kilts from the hanging loops...they're like a long slightly bent piece of pipe with stops on the end. The kiltmaker using them won't sell them in person or on line. But they only work for traditionals with the loops.
I'm thinking something with a double row of adjustable J hooks to hook into the top of belt loops for contemporary kilts...maybe time to visit the hardware store and the lumber yard play around a bit....

Thanks for that Corona, looks better than my home made efforts.
Do you have one. Copy mentions leather but its confusing for me. Is there leather on the inside of the wood clamps or something?
Thanks for any help and welcome to the board.

it's about storing kilts. I'm using regular old pants hangers, and the problem is that they pull the pleats all kittywhompus around the buckles/straps because I have to fold the waistband over in thirds.. After hanging for a couple of weeks I have to re-iron the pleats around the sides of my hips or they look like the dickens. I even have a kilt-hanger from Stillwater, and what it is, is just an old fashioned pants hanger.
I don't have room to store them all laid out flat, which would be ideal, I think. They're gonna have to live in the closet. I *THINK* that an old fashioned pants hanger
like this: http://www.alwaysbrilliant.com/aa/aa...nt_Hangers.htm
only with the pieces of wood about 14-16 inches long instead of 8 would do it, but I've never seen such a thing. Anybody got any solutions out there?
This thread got us thinking! Here's what we came up with... hope it helps. :-)
