Sorry Leathercubby I had a post concerning the problems encountered wearing a Tartan Army Breacon kilt but the Thought Police have removed it. Join me on the Sporran Clan Bulletin Board and I can advise you without restraint. This is a stiffling atmosphere.

Hey Leathercubby,

You must be associated with the Barclay's/Barkley's in some way if you are wanting a kilt in that tartan. There are so few of us around. Welcome to the board. Which variation do you prefer, hunting or dress?

My great great grandparents (her in the Wisconsin) were Wilson and Barclay. I visited the grave of my great great great great grandfather, David Barclay, in Dundonald, Ayrshire, Scotland earlier this month. No, my name is not Barclay, but my lineage is. I am trying to get my Dad (big into geneology) to try to get ffurther back on the Barclay line. Good to meet you. I have a tie in the Barclay ancient, which is REALLY close to the Wilson ancient, but I really like the dress. I think it would be fantastic with a Prince Charlie Jacket for formal wear.

Thanks David and Colin for the reference. Yes, I have Kinloch Anderson's Breacans, four of them in fact: Tartan Army (it was my first Breacan, bought in November 1998 ), Kinloch Anderson Corporate and City of Edinburgh (both in March 1999), and Kinloch Anderson Hunting (July 1999). There are not-very-good photos of all four in my Photo Album, taken with my first digital camera - time to re-shoot them perhaps!

Rick's description of the Breacan is pretty much spot-on. The woollen worsted fabric is lightweight, somewhere around 13oz is my guess, which hangs and 'behaves' well and is supremely comfortable.

This is NOT me (!), but it shows the KA Hunting tartan, which is my favourite of the four I have. Having just looked at the KA website, I see that they no longer list the Tartan Army tartan. When I bought that one, it was the only tartan available in their new-fangled Breacan, so I had no choice. I snapped up the others as they were added to the range.

Would I recommend the Breacan? Indeed I would!

I thought Wilson was a sept of Clan Gunn. I chose Wilson as the tartan of my first kilt because my Great Grandmother (born in the Wisconsin) was 100% Scottish and was born a Wilson, later marrying a 100% Norwegian. I knew my great grandmother when I was a child and remeber playing chinese checkers and scrabble with her, so that adds to my fondnest to the Wilson line. It is also the line that we know the most about. When I was in Scotland earlier this month, I visited fourth cousins twice removed. One was from the lineage of my great-great-great grandfather's brother and the other from his sister. That was very fortunate for me. I came home with 2 water color paintings form 1865, painted by Alexander Wilson (my great-great-great grandfather's brother).

this post makes me regret not buying one of KA's kilts while I was there and had the chance.
Moral of the story....seize the moment, especially when it involves kilts!

Looks like they have some nice kilts. However, I was especially interested in their jackets. It looks like their made to order jackets are made with lots of your personal measurements and would be a better fit than the standard sizes. They are a little more expensive though.

Alas, it is not, Graham! Would that it were - I mean, apart from the good looks (and figure!) he probably was paid for the photo-shoot in kilts. Imagine that!
