Name that tartan!
My mom was out tonight, came across this tartan and picked it up for me, 7 yards at a great price, although I dont know the weight or quality before I get it from her...
So... NAME THAT TARTAN! Anyone know what it is?

Ooh, and one I've heard of before too. Looks like it's time to break out Barb's book for real and give this traditional kiltmaking a shot. She said it's 7 to 7.5 yards, hope it's enough... I dont remember if I had read that it's possible to cut the fabric in half and seam it together... I guess the top and bottom selvadges would have to match up perfectly. I'm a 44" waist so, its not looking good so far. Any experts out there think a Black Stewart in a medium weight tartan could fit my porky frame in 7 yards? Gotta see what the sett size is on it when I get it on Thursday.

How wide is it? Most modern fabric is 54" to 59" wide and is cut lengthwise to make a tailored kilt, producing two selvedge edges and two cut edges that become part of the waistband. In that case, you'd have two kilts there, since 7 yards is enough to make reasonable kilt for a 44" waist, if only just. Or it would be abundantly enough to make a couple of four yarders.

Stop a minute....
I'm a bit confused here I don't know if it's the picture but there is a thin blue line placed a little differenty than on other black stewarts I've seen. Maybe someone can correct me here.
Still a nice tartan thou
