I agree with Graham here, just gather the pleats up and hold them at the front.

God, I hope I never have to do either in a public place... scary thought. But at home I am all for just taking it off.

Taking off the kilt is so much easier then trying to hold the back up the entire time. I'm all for doing it the easy way.

Adding to what has been said, I have found a workable technique of flipping the kilt behind my back as I sit, and holding it in place with my left arm.
With my right hand I have learned to detach and use the appropriate amount of tissue single-handed.

Of course, this is reversed when visiting India, since local custom demands the left hand be used for toilet and the right hand for food.
and never the twain shall meet..
Thus the left handed comment was born....

If you don't want to go through all that lifting or taking it off,and don't want to use public facilities, then may I suggest wearing Depends?

As someone with IBS, who generally spends more time in the loo than most people, I've found it easier for me to just take the whole thing off, as Matt suggested. If I happen to be in public (sadly, it happens!), I just carefully drape it over the knees.

Someone, I believe on one of the other kilt forums, suggested taking it off and draping around the shoulders like a cape to keep off the floor and facilities.

    Regards,
    Mark

Alright, maybe I'm just confused- I've been able to sit on a toilet in semi-public restrooms* in a wedding gown with 3 foot train and not get it dirty, I respectfully suggest those people who condone taking the whole thing off may want to try the flip-n-hold method and practice it a little before the main event- you may find it a lot easier and faster in the long run once you get it down. Er, up. You know what I mean.

I'm not saying I'm right and you're wrong, by all means do as you feel best, just saying it seems an awful lot of trouble to go through for the occasion.

I find pulling the whole kilt up to/past my abdominal area and then making use of the aforementioned "flip technique" seems to do the trick.
