Aesthetics
From a purely aesthetic p.o.v., you may also wish to take into account how tall & wide you are. Such a striking contrast as white on the upper body & black from the waist down will tend to cut you in half & make you look shorter & wider. If you are tall & thin, it may not be an issue for you. But if you desire to appear taller and/or thinner, it might not be your best look.
Also, today's fashion mavens (& I know you really care what they have to say) ;-) insist that the No White after Labor Day rule doesn't exist anymore. I'm not sure if they would apply that to tux jackets (probably not).
And just FYI, no mini skirts after 35.

Sherry, is that waist size or age?

Only a cad sir, would wear a white evening jacket west of Suez or north of the tropics.

I once read an advice column, in which a writer asked about wearing a white jacket at a formal event.
The reply was, "Only if you're a waiter."

Well what I did was...
I wanted the same thing, a nice jacket to wear with my kilt but blanched at the cost of a Prince Charley.
So here is what I did was buy a cheap black wool sport coat one size too large. Do you know what the differance is between a tux and a sport coat? The cuff buttons, with 4 it is a sport coat, 1 and it is a tux. Yeah I pulled off all of the plastic buttons. Took this down to a local tailor and had him cut the whole thing off at the waist, put a 45 degree cut on the front to clear the sporran, and tailor the jacket to fit me. Total cost $50 for the jacket, and $60 for the tailoring.
So now depending on how I accessorize the jacket & kilt I can have from casual to formal with one garmet.
Forget white, go with black.

I too have always understood that, in the best regulated circles, white jackets would be seen only on waiters. Personally, I would not be seen dead in one - not for the above reason (although that is reason enough!) but because I simply think they look ghastly. As for the jacket found by Raphael on Ebay: it resembles something to be found in a theatrical costumer's establishment. There is nothing traditional or authentic about it at all! (No offence, Raph. I cannot see you wearing such a thing anyway!! ;))

My tux, like most others I've seen, has satin lapels. I've never seen those on a sport coat.
Of course, my tux has not left the closet since I got my kilt.

Don't Worry, Ham. I don't see myself wearing that either.
