Just one thing though - this is me nit-picking again - I think I would have opted for a rather less 'busy' tie! The colour is good, in that it draws the least obvious colour in the kilt, as do your flashes, but because of its pattern it dominates the entire outfit and, to my mind, clashes with the kilt. For the very best effect, with a tartan kilt keep everything else plain and simple - let the tartan shine!!
Score? 9/10! ;)
Ham, interesting point. I did not look that closely initially, was more focused on the jacket, and the beautiful tartan. In retrospect, if this were for an informal or business affair, I think that the tie and flashes together give it a festive, fun air. However, if the intent is to fit into a formal affair, then I would want a tie that was a little less flashy. Not sure I would change the flashes in either case.

David,
I do like the looks of that tartan, stunning.
When you get a glowing comment from Hamish, you cannot go wrong.

Thank you one and all. However, I disagree. A silk tie with a racing motif is the correct choice for a day at the races. For my business dinner last week I wore a white shirt and a blue silk tie. The flashes were also Angus. Guess I should have posted that picture.

David, that is what I was trying to indicate with my post, although I may not have made that clear.

David, I am sorry! I keep forgetting about the differences between what is acceptable in the USA and what is acceptable in Britain. What you say might well be correct, but I still say, no matter what the occasion, if you are wearing a tartan kilt then that should take the attention in your overall appearance. To me, your racing motif tie (I would not have known that was what is is!) totally dominates your image and clashes with the tartan. If you had been wearing a dark coloured trousered suit (Heaven forfend!) I would not have criticised the tie!!
How fortunate it is that we all see things differently.

David
I'm new to this board and looking to buy my first kilt.
I have a great kilt and I made one in the kingussie style for use in reenacting
Its now time to have one to wear around town,
I've been thinking about ordering a 5 yard kilt in 16 oz strome (muir ancient tartan) from heritage of scotland, were there any charges other than advertised price and shipping?
any advice offered would be welcome

Joe, I will offer everything I know. The only charges I got were as advertised. A good while later I did receive a healthy bill form Fedex. I have told the story so here's the short version. The rate was wrong, the litany of charges were excessive. Two calls to customs, eight calls to Fedex, written complaint to Fedex & customs reduced the bill to actual custom charges. Since then I have insisted on Royal Mail/USPS and have been very happy.
I have tanks only for Heritage, but will order a 5 yard. I do recomend that you invest in a phone call to verify everything, but I do that if I'm buying guns, books or kilts.
Little secret, watch ebay. Some auctions go higher that advertised, some much lower.
PM if you need anything.

When ordering from across the pond you will also have to pay a currency conversion charge that gets billed to your credit card, I had to pay an $8.50 conversion charge.
The next kilt I order will be from someone in the US, I think it is easier to pin down the charges in advance.
