I imagine the lower it sits, the more it swings. When I get my Freelander (plug, plug ;-) ) I plan on wearing it no more than a couple of inches below my buckle.

It's hard to put my grandfather's directions into words but basically he said to wear it so that when you sit down, the weight helps with modesty, if you get my drift. My practice is to wear it low and raise it until I find that place, which has a comforting pressure on a place that enjoys comfort. This also argues against cosmetic sporrans: if there's no weight, it's going to bounce around while walking and not help modesty when you sit down.

I think the noise is louder to us than it is to others because we fixate on it and because it's always with us while the casual observer is only aware of the sound as we pass in close proximity. That said, if I'm in a really quiet place such as a church service a little poster putty (I think this is the same as blue-tac) will hold the tassels just fine for the short term. I've been using this on a regular basis for several months without any apparent damage to my sporran.

This question came up maybe a year ago. At that time I advocated that a tiny blob of Blu-Tac be placed behind each tassel, and the tassel then being pressed firmly against the leather front of the sporran. I found that that was quite sufficient to hold those tassels in silent mode for several years without need for replacement. Whenever you have a requirement to release the tassels, simply pull them away and rub off the Blu-Tac. It leaves no marks.

Personally, I welcome that rhythmic sound but my walking/hiking companion (also a kilt wearer, but sans tassels!) absolutely hates the it - unless he is in step with me!!

I'm with James here, and cut them off long ago. I guess some folks like the sound, but others (like me) are driven mad by it.

I didn't like it at all on my first sporran. But that one was a hard leather variety. The one I have and use now is a softer leather, one of the buzz kidder rob roys ordered from USAK. It's [the thumping sound] a little more subdued on this one, as the leather is softer.

So now, as the others have said, I think of it more as a cadence, or keeping up the beat for me to walk to. I rather enjoy it.

    Sporrans

    Rick,
If you don't like them cut them off. They serve no purpose today, except decoration. With the cookie cutter sporrans, and the hard leather they can be annoying. If you’re going to go kilted a lot maybe you should get a sporran that really serves it purpose.

    Like perhaps a Freelander Sporran?!?

Sorry, unashamed plug here. I'll stop now.

I'm just looking forward to one that actually holds stuff.
