The old Disney version was better, and it was Peter O'Toole, not Michael Caine, who briefly appeared as Rob Roy's son in full Highland dress, and uttered, "I can pipe like a MacKrimmon!" when challenged by Allan Breck to a contest....
Not in the version I was referring to it wasn't. It was indeed Michael Caine as Alan Breck

Actually, a thought occurs, an Appin Stewart highlander who'd just spent a long time in France fighting for the French king, might well sound funny speaking his second (or, by now, third?) language. Perhaps, Michael Caine wasn't such a bad choice for the 1971 movie?

Now lets talk about the Michael York/Richard Thomas version of "The Master of Ballentrae." Loved it...!

Honestly, it was 3 am when I saw it on TV a few years ago so I may not have the best recollection of the quality of film. What can I say though, I saw tartan so i watched it......

I just wanted to thank you all for turning me on to this movie and book. I checked out both the latest version and the Disney flick and I have to say the Disney one with Peter Finch was the better. The book is a good read.

You'd also enjoy some of RL Stevenson's other Scottish tales: "David Balfour", which is a sequel to "Kidnapped" (also published under the title "Catriona"), and "The Master of Ballantrae" - my favorite!

Thanks I'll check them out. I commute 2 hours each way to work and I am always looking for a good book to pass the time.

Just a suggestion, but if you haven't already read it you might appreciate Redgauntlet by Sir Walter Scott - it's the same sort of story.
