Nice tartan... it remindes me of Old Stewart, only with a simpler sett.
If you want to have cloth woven and made into a kilt, I offer this service for $480. This price is total what you would pay (minus shipping) for a four-yard box pleated kilt tailor made from custom woven heavy weight wool kilting cloth, woven in Scotland. (Assuming your hip size is 46" or less).
If you want to have the tartan recorded by the STA, you are free to do so on your own, or I can do that for you, but it's not a requirement for you to get the cloth woven. Cost for that ranges from nothing to 125 pounds (for a personal tartan), depending on just what you want. Read up on their web site about tartan recording.
Anyway, it can be a reality if you want it to be. I like to remind people that you can have a four-yard box pleated kilt in a custom woven tartan of your choice for less money than you can get an eight-yard knife pleated kilt in a common stocked tartan.
Aye,
Matt

AAAHHHHHHH! Mac, don't tell me that! I am now drooling on my keyboard. I had definitely had you on my list as one of my desired kilts, as I really like the look of a box pleated kilt, but now you add this enticement to the list! It probably will not happen this year, but just wait until after the New YEar. A 4 yard, box pleated, wool kilt in a tartan of my own design for UNDER $500!!! Life would be grand. Now I need to show my wife the tartan and see what she thinks!

Yeah, Matt is a devil, isn't he? I'm cashed out untill my part time job starts up next spring (I refuse to feed my kilt/motorcycle/stereo jones on a diet of 21% plastic when cash is so much healthier for both of us); but he's on my short short list of kiltmakers to chat up come Beltane.
Bryan...besides, I've still got three in the pipeline...

Oh yes Matt is such a source of great goods and knowledge, how did we have a happy kilted life without him?

Actually, be very careful about that. Since none of the US military tartans are "official" they are not part of a uniform, even as an optional item. It is against Army regulations to mix uniform items with other clothing and it is quite likely the same with the Air Force. I suppose the local commander could "bend the rules" a little, but don't just show up with the kilt unless it has been approved. Wouldn't want you to get in trouble.
By the way, welcome to the board and thanks for your service to the country.

Hey could you let us know if you get approved to wear the kilt with the mess dress for the ball?
My son is going into the USAF shortly, and he loves kilts.
I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
