Thanks! When we first looked at this house I went to the living room first, while Karen checked out the kitchen. She fell in love with it, and I fell in love with the rock-fronted wood burning fireplace.

When I bought mine, I was advised by the kiltmaker that the jacket should be left un-buttoned and that's the way I typically wear it. But I'll let others comment and stand corrected if this point is in error.

Can anyone confirm this? I recently received my own black Argyll jacket and I CAN'T button it. Actually, I could, but it would be so tight at the waist that it would not look good. However, that is the only place that it does not fit. The sleeves are perfect, very good in the shoulders, etc.. I measured around the largest part of my chest, just under the arms, before ordering it and came up with 42". I decided to hedge and get a 44, and since I have long arms, got a 44L. If the Argyll is supposed to be worn open, I might be OK, but if you are supposed to be able to button it, I need about a 48. Luckily the seller I bought it from is willing to exchange for a larger size if necessary.

Because of the way the Argyle curves in the front so as not to hide the sporran I personally feel that even if properly sized an Argyle looks funny if buttoned. It always looks to me like the jacket is straining at the button simply because of the way it falls away.
I find that if there is a need to have something covering the gut, a matching vest is a much better idea than trying to button an Argyle jacket.

Glassman said it best...when I had my jacket buttoned it seemed to be straining a bit. Even my wife thought so. Guess I better wear it properly, un-buttoned.

Dude, I think you look good.But.
Try to think about the rules that Hamish has been trying to teach us.
Hose probably should be cream or oatmeal to match the shirt, tie should be emerald green to match the garter flashes, unbutton your jacket, the button is really only for show!
Anyway like the general look, it suits you sir.

I like the black hose, but you should have options for different looks. It seems to me that hose look best matched to the dominant top color. And when wearing a jacket, the jacket is dominant to the shirt.
But do try out variations. I'd hate for you to get stuck in a rut.

Al,
Basically I like the look, but as you have heard, you do have many options, so do not limit yourself to just the black hose.

Al, in spite of what I have been propounding all these years, I like the black hose!! Besides, I believe your kilt is in an Irish rather than a Scottish tartan and the Irish have slightly different 'rules' (I use that word VERY loosely indeed!). Black hose is frequently seen in Ireland, especially with black jackets.
Oatmeal hose would be far too informal for wear with a black Argyll, in my opinion - it works well in virtually all casual/informal circumstances, but not formal.
In your case, I do not think green hose would be a good idea. For one thing, it would be very difficult to obtain the matching green, unless you have them especially knitted. The green kilt hose normally available is in bottle green - too dark to look good with your kilt.
Finally, the excellent jacket would look so much better if left unbuttoned.

That's a great looking jacket. I really want to get one. Oh well, maybe if I get a decent income tax refund this year.
