Here in Utah the question is "where are your bagpipes, and what part of Scotland is that (the Kilt) from?" I have to Explane I am American with Welsh-Scottish ancestery. If I am wearing the Black Watch tartan I will sometimes give them a short history lesson unless their eyes start wandering then it is "See you later time".

People usually ask me if I'm Scottish. I answer that I'm American.... then I add that there is some Scot heritage, in a round-about way, but that the heritage isn't why I wear the kilt, that I wear it because I like to.

Funny, the question I normally get is "Is your family from Scotland?" Most assume that I'm of Scottish descent but not actually Scottish even before I open my mouth. And consider I always dress up very traditionally I find that interesting. I seldom get asked if I'm Irish. I can't even think of the last time.
I also get a lot of questions about the tartans.
And at church it's really cool because there is a huge Scottish contingent in our congregation, even fellow members of my Clan! And many of the ladies were once involved in Scottish dancing.

I've gotten both the Irish and Scottish question, but to give them credit I'm usually wearing a green UK when they ask Irish.
Of course, there was the one time when a wise@$$ yelled out "Hey, you from Scotland?!" as I was walking by. I looked at him and said "Nope. Pennsylvania."
You could hear the little hamster in his head fall off its wheel.;)

A lot of it depends on the day and what part of town I am in. My most favorite comment is "What part of Celtica are you from"?

I think the next time I get the combined question..."Are you Irish" and "Do you play the bagpipes?" I'm going to say...
"No, I don't play bagpipes. I used to, but the 'wee folks stole 'em." ;)
*LOL*

Here in Savannah there is a huge Irish community, or Irish descent, so the only time they see a kilt is during St Patty's parade day being worn by pipers, so most of the time people assume Im Irish, some say Scottish, but they never guess it right.

The truth is that I'm both Scottish and Irish. Someone once asked if that meant I hated myself. ;)
